Adrian's early memories

Created by Adrian 12 years ago
I have few memories of my childhood over 37 years ago. I do remember though when I could only have been about five when my brother Leigh, our Mum Nanette and I lived in West kingsdown, Kent. One day I knew something unexpected and important had happened, based on an intuitive feeling only but no explanation. From this point forward their was just the three of us, our mother and two very young children. With little money, no career prospects until the burden of dressing, bathing, grooming and feeding two young boys would ease by their maturity, our mother was unlikely to be anyone’s dream catch and surely the worry and anxiety was overwhelming. I have tried to imagine myself as a young man, in early years of apprenticeship and employment, would I be prepared to get involved with a young women with two young children? probably not, no certainly not. I don’t think many would but gladly Ian was different and he did. So very fortunate for the three of us, Ian and our mum married on 7th December 1974. For me, this will be the greatest and most defining memory I have of Ian, who knows how poorer our lives and opportunities would have been without him. Ian was a hardworking, strong, loving, and a gentle father. He loved Leigh and I and was deeply devoted to our mother. He woke up everyday, tea and a fag, and went to work to provide for our family. He truly believed that if you worked hard, treated people right, knew the value of everything and with a little luck, you could have a good Life. He will be missed by us all.
